Cricut Design Space can upload a PNG, but it turns it into a single flat layer, and its own image cleanup is rough around curves and text. An SVG keeps every color as its own layer with smooth outlines, so each one can be cut from its own vinyl or cardstock. Shapesoda traces your image into exactly that kind of SVG, and lets you trim specks and extra colors before you ever open Design Space.
How to make a Cricut SVG
Drop, paste or choose your PNG or JPG above. Tracing starts right away, no sign-up needed to see the result.
Set Colors to the number of vinyl or cardstock colors you plan to cut. Under Shapes, choose “Cut-outs, grouped by color”.
Remove the background and any bits you don't want to cut with the remove-shape tool, then download SVG and upload it in Design Space.
Why cut-outs matter
Many SVGs stack colors on top of each other: the bottom color is a full silhouette and the others sit on it. For printing that's fine, but a cutting machine then cuts the hidden parts too, which wastes material and makes layering harder. Cut-out shapes don't overlap, so each color is cut as exactly the piece you see.
Tips for clean cuts
Fewer colors mean fewer layers to weed and line up. Two or three is plenty for most decals.
Raise “Min shape size” so dust-sized pieces don't end up on your mat.
Thin lines and small text cut poorly in any material. Start from a large image so they stay thick enough.
In Design Space, set the final size after upload; the SVG scales without losing sharpness.
Everything a clean vector needs
Clean curves
Smooth Bézier curves with only the nodes the shape needs. Easy to edit and cut.
Gradients stay gradients
Color fades become real SVG gradients you can edit.

Frequently asked questions
Does the SVG work in Cricut Design Space?
Yes. Upload it as a regular SVG. Each color arrives as its own layer you can resize, recolor, hide or attach.
Can I use these files with other cutters?
Yes. The same SVG works in Silhouette Studio (Designer Edition and up), Brother ScanNCut CanvasWorkspace, Sure Cuts A Lot and Inkscape. There is also DXF for programs that prefer it.
Is Shapesoda made by Cricut?
No. Shapesoda is an independent tool and is not affiliated with Cricut, Inc. Cricut and Design Space are their trademarks.
What is a credit?
Without a plan, one credit is one downloaded image, in any format. The Personal plan needs no credits on the website; the API plan adds credits every month. Re-downloading the same image — even in another format — is free for 30 days.
Do credits expire?
Not while your API plan is active: unused credits roll over, up to 5 months’ worth. When the plan ends, its credits expire. The free credit for new accounts does not expire.
Do you store my images?
Only when you need it. The editor keeps your image in memory only while you work, and an API request for a single format keeps nothing. When you ask the API for several formats, request storage, or use the MCP server, the image and the results are kept for 24 hours, encrypted with a key that only you receive (anyone with the result link can download it), then deleted automatically. We never use your images to train models. The list of recent images on the start screen lives only in your browser.
Who owns the vector files?
You do. You keep all rights to the images you upload and to the vectors made from them — we claim none. Please upload only images you have the right to use.
