A laser can engrave a bitmap, but cutting needs vector outlines, and vector engraving of logos and lettering is faster and sharper than raster engraving. Shapesoda traces your PNG or JPG into closed filled shapes. Each color lands on its own layer, so in LightBurn, Glowforge or xTool software you can send one color to cut, another to score and another to fill engraving.

How to prepare a laser file

  1. Drop, paste or choose your PNG or JPG file above. Tracing starts right away — no sign-up needed to see the result.
  2. Check the result in the split view. Adjust colors and detail in the panel on the right, or fix spots with the pencil, fill and remove-shape tools.
  3. Choose SVG, DXF or PDF in the export menu and download. LightBurn reads all three; Glowforge prefers SVG or PDF; xTool Creative Space reads SVG and DXF.

Cut, score or engrave

  • Use one color per operation: for example black for cut, red for score, blue for fill engrave.
  • Set Colors to two for a plain cut-out shape, and remove the background shape.
  • Choose cut-out shapes so outlines don't overlap and no line is cut twice.
  • Raise “Min shape size” to drop specks that would turn into tiny burns.

About photos

Photo engraving works best from the original bitmap with your laser software's dithering. Vector tracing suits photos only as a stylized effect: with two to four colors a photo becomes a bold stencil-like image that cuts and engraves cleanly.

Everything a clean vector needs

Clean curves

Smooth Bézier curves with only the nodes the shape needs. Easy to edit and cut.

Gradients stay gradients

Color fades become real SVG gradients you can edit.

Every format

SVG, PDF, EPS, AI, DXF and PNG from one result.

Vectorize from your AI chat

Connect Shapesoda to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any MCP client.

Edit right in the browser

Recolor, draw, pick colors or remove shapes. No Illustrator needed.

One API call

Send a JPG or PNG, get an SVG back. Add vectorization to your app.

Frequently asked questions

Are the shapes closed?

Yes. Every shape is a closed outline, which laser software needs for cutting and fill engraving.

What size will the file be?

SVG and DXF use image pixels as units. Set the final size in your laser software; the vector scales without losing quality.

Do I need an account?

Not to trace and edit. You sign in to download, and the first download for a new account is free.

What is a credit?

Without a plan, one credit is one downloaded image, in any format. The Personal plan needs no credits on the website; the API plan adds credits every month. Re-downloading the same image — even in another format — is free for 30 days.

Do credits expire?

Not while your API plan is active: unused credits roll over, up to 5 months’ worth. When the plan ends, its credits expire. The free credit for new accounts does not expire.

Do you store my images?

Only when you need it. The editor keeps your image in memory only while you work, and an API request for a single format keeps nothing. When you ask the API for several formats, request storage, or use the MCP server, the image and the results are kept for 24 hours, encrypted with a key that only you receive (anyone with the result link can download it), then deleted automatically. We never use your images to train models. The list of recent images on the start screen lives only in your browser.

Who owns the vector files?

You do. You keep all rights to the images you upload and to the vectors made from them — we claim none. Please upload only images you have the right to use.
