Silhouette Studio has a built-in trace, but it works on one threshold at a time and needs a lot of fiddling on colored or blurry images. Shapesoda traces the whole image into clean shapes with smooth curves, and you can download the result in the format your edition of Silhouette Studio opens.
Which format to pick
Basic Edition (free): DXF. It opens DXF files directly, while SVG and PDF import need Designer Edition or higher.
Designer Edition and higher: SVG keeps colors and opens with fills, so it is easier to work with.
Both formats come from the same result. Re-downloading the same image is free for 30 days.
How to prepare the cut file
Drop, paste or choose your PNG or JPG above. Tracing starts right away, no sign-up needed to see the result.
Reduce Colors to the number of materials you will cut. Under Shapes, choose “Cut-outs, grouped by color” so pieces don't overlap.
Remove the background with the remove-shape tool, download DXF or SVG and open it in Silhouette Studio.
Tips
Raise “Min shape size” to drop specks that would turn into tiny cuts.
DXF has no fill colors, so in Basic Edition every piece arrives as an outline. Keep the number of colors low so pieces are easy to tell apart.
Set the final size in Silhouette Studio; the vector scales without losing quality.

Frequently asked questions
Why won't my SVG open in Silhouette Studio?
SVG import needs Designer Edition or higher. In the free Basic Edition, download DXF instead.
Will it work for print and cut?
For print and cut, keep the original image for printing and use the traced outline as the cut line. Download SVG or DXF with two colors to get one clean outer outline.
Is Shapesoda part of Silhouette?
No. Shapesoda is an independent tool, not affiliated with Silhouette America. Silhouette Studio and Cameo are their trademarks.
What is a credit?
Without a plan, one credit is one downloaded image, in any format. The Personal plan needs no credits on the website; the API plan adds credits every month. Re-downloading the same image — even in another format — is free for 30 days.
Do credits expire?
Not while your API plan is active: unused credits roll over, up to 5 months’ worth. When the plan ends, its credits expire. The free credit for new accounts does not expire.
Do you store my images?
Only when you need it. The editor keeps your image in memory only while you work, and an API request for a single format keeps nothing. When you ask the API for several formats, request storage, or use the MCP server, the image and the results are kept for 24 hours, encrypted with a key that only you receive (anyone with the result link can download it), then deleted automatically. We never use your images to train models. The list of recent images on the start screen lives only in your browser.
Who owns the vector files?
You do. You keep all rights to the images you upload and to the vectors made from them — we claim none. Please upload only images you have the right to use.
